Tianna it is so good to hear from you. I am sending you the baby slideshow I just put together. Nicolas was born on 09-05-09 at 11:16 in the morning. He weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces and measures 20.5 inches in length. We are recovering well from a traumatic delivery as you’ll see in the slideshow. He is truly a blessing. Everyone says he looks like his dad. He is soooo cute!

    Hi Mrs. Milis,
I think that the mandala activity sounds very fun and creative, but I was a little concerned reading about mandalas that this assignment may be promoting some new age ( or religous) beleifs.
I hate to be a pest but would you please clarify whether or not this assignment is doing so?

P.S. congrats on little nick/the website is amazing and easily navigable

    thanks for reading

Dear Mrs. Millis 10-25-09 My name is Jacqueline Gutierrez, and I’m 15 years old. I’ve been enrolled in your class this year. You don’t even have to worry about me flunking your class because I have always done good in english. Well, honestly in the beginning of this year I didn’t do so “hot”. I know this year will be an amazing experience. This is actually my first year at La Quinta High school. I’m truly a sophomore; last year i went to Horizon Independent studies. I’ve never really completed a school. For kindergarten I attended James Monroe. For first through fifth grade I went to John Adams. I thought I was going to attend all three years at La Quinta middle, but i went to Col. Mitchell Paige for seventh and eight grade. The reason why I kept on moving schools was because everytime my mom found out about a new one, she would always think it was better than the one I attened to before. Like I mentioned before, I did attend Horizon for freshman year. In retrospect; I thought I was going to stay there until I graduated high school… But obviously I didn’t. Ultimately I hope to stay the remaining years here at Lqhs. Now that I have told you about my school history, I would love you to stick around and hear a little more about my self. Like I said before, My name is Jacqueline Gutierrez, and I’m fifteen years old. I have two little brothers; Jorge is 9; Benji is 6. My parents are Jorge Luis, and Araceli Gutierrez. I was born in East Los Angeles, at Santa Marta Hospital. I lived in East L.A with my parents, my aunts and uncle, in a small apartment for a year. Then when I was one and a half my parents bought a house in Bellflower; 20 minutes away. For like 2 years we lived there. In that time my moms youngest sister got married and moved to a city two hours away called “La Quinta”. We went to come visit her, and my parents loved the desert. We didn’t exactly move straight to L.Q right away. We lived in Palm springs, and we moved around Bermuda Dunes a few times. Then we settled in the quited cove, where we live now. This past summer I traveled to Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico for the first time. It was an amazing experience. It was also my first time flying on a plane, it was really exciting, but I was so nervous. When I arrived there, i was so excited to see my family. My dads family lives over there. Its also suprising how humid it was. Wnen my grandparents told me we were going to the beach, I jumped up, I was filled with excitement. When we got to the beach, the beach was something that you would imagine you’d see in thos Travel Channel specials. The beach was so warm, about 90 degrees. the beach was also clear. i remember on my last night there, my aunt, her friends and I went bowling, and to Apple bees. We went to the beach last mintue. Since the beach was across the restaurant, we walked there in 3 minutes. We were at the beach from one thirty in the morning to about three. IT WAS THE MOST AMAZING EXPERIENCE IN MY WHOLE LIFE. I cant wait to go next summer! Now I would love to tell you about my future goals and dreams. I without a doubt, would want to be a Forensic Scientist, or something invlolving investigating murders and getting down and dirty into a juicy mystery. I also want to get married and have 10 kids! I’m just joking, i don’t want to be the crazy mom who has a million kids. All in all, this is my story that i wanted to tell to you. It’s still in the making, but this is what has happened so far. Yours truly Jacqueline Gutierrez

    The Legislative Branch

The legislative branch was established by the first Article of the Constitution. It consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate, and this together forms the United States Congress. The Constitution grants Congress the authority to enact legislation and declare war, the right to confirm or reject many Presidential appointments, and significant investigative powers as well.

The House of Representatives contains 435 elected members. These members are divided among the 50 states according to their total population. There are also 6 non-voting members, which represent the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and five territories of the United States. The presiding officer of the chamber is the Speaker of the House which is elected by the Representatives. The House members are elected every two years and must be 25 years of age, a U.S. citizen for at least seven years, and a resident of the State they represent for six months. The House has many powers assigned exclusively to it. It has the power to initiate revenue bills, impeach federal officials, and elect the President in the case of an Electoral College tie.

The Senate is made up of 100 Senators, with two for each state. It wasn’t until the ratification of the 17th Amendment in year 1913 that Senators were chosen by state legislatures, and not by popular vote. Since then, they have been elected to six-year terms by the people of each state. Senator’s terms are stalled so that about one-third of the Senate is up for reelection every two years. Senators must be 30 years of age, U.S. citizens for at least nine years, and residents of the state they represent for six months. The Senate has the power to confirm the President’s appointments that require consent, and to ratify treaties. There are two exceptions to this rule: the House must also approve appointments to the Vice Presidency as well as treaties that involve foreign trade. The Senate also tries impeachment cases for federal officials referred to it by the House. When you pass legislation and send it to the President for his signature, the House and the Senate must pass the same bill by the majority vote. If the President vetoes a bill, they may override his veto by passing the bill again in each chamber with at least two-thirds of each body voting in favor.

During the Legislative process, a bill must first be introduced to Congress. After that it is referred to a committee. There, it is examined carefully and the chances of its passage are determined. If the committee fails to act on the bill, then the bill dies. Then, subcommittee review is performed with studies and meetings. Mark up then follows. In this process, the subcommittee meets to make changes before sending the bill to the full committee. After the debate and the approval of any amendments, the bill is passed or defeated by the members voting. After both the House and Senate have approved a bill, it is sent to the president. If the President approves, he will sign the bill. If he disagrees, then he can veto it and send it back with objections. If the President does not act upon the bill for ten days after it is sent, then it becomes a law. Even if the President vetoes the bill, Congress can override it. If both the Senate and the House pass the bill by a two-thirds majority vote, then the president’s veto is overruled and the bill becomes a law.

That is the process of how a bill becomes a law. As you can see, we have a very complicated legislative process, but it is one that I think is pretty fair overall.
